The Importance of Substance

“I got my hair done!”

“I got my nails done!”

There’s clearly nothing deeper

about the world’s

shallow and transparent women

who can easily be seen through.

Don’t get me wrong!

Having a nice appearance is lovely;

But do you have any substance to go with that?

Can you handle an intelligent conversation?

Are your discussions primarily about shopping?

Does your whole existence revolve around a man?

Do you have 5 babies from 5 different people?

Do you have any real, concrete life plans?

Let other people talk about their own business.

Please make it a point

to go get some of your own!

Reading a good book is always nice!

Open your mind to discover

how others sigh and groan.

There are men who lack substance, too.

They are appeased by trifling women,

but are intimidated by depth and intelligence.

They think ‘stuck up’ is any woman of elegance.

Ladies, I know you see through ‘em.

Their chauvinistic pride can’t take rejection,

so they have to resort to giving you a hard time.

The only thing man about them is their erection

and that probably doesn’t even last long.

The previous is not my concern.

I’m just speakin’ the truth here,

because I can’t stand being around the mentality

that can’t recognize a woman

from any direction other than her rear!

Some men tend to talk about nothing but themselves, too

--their house(s), their car(s), their jewelry.

If they’re athletes,

it’s all about how many points they scored.

The feelings of the people who really care about them

are often ignored.

True, you did achieve those things,

but you alone are not what life is all about.

Do you make it a point to give back to your community?

Do you recognize the fact

that your community is still in a bout?

People who have substance do.

Such reach out to be a part of something

that’s greater than themselves.

These want to touch people’s lives for the better.

We need our youth

to abstain from the grasp of prison cells.

The composition of our bodies

points to our being made out of deep thought,

but our actions at times

make it seem as if otherwise is the case.

Ask yourself: “Is there a specified price

at which I can be bought?

Some people will easily sell their souls

out of outright disgrace.

I personally love a woman of substance.

You can’t get enough of something

that has an exquisite, champagne taste,

which is why all that sleepin’ around is overrated.

Once the rollercoaster is over,

real people who have substance

are the only ones

who are going to stick to you

unconditionally!

straight from the hip, Charles,
no fudge or nonsense, a real
well-written lesson in what's real and worthwhile

what sage and direct advice you write of...oh that it could be 'required' reading for our youth...thanks charles for another fine piece

I love the directness of your poems, stressing what is right over what is not. Peers lead our youth. Sometimes, they lead them astray. It so good when an adult takes charge and lays down the real deal. I hope young people are reading your poems and getting the message.

Now here is a poem that says it like it is! Your words brush aside the inanities and focus on those wonderful beings 'The Real People'.
A shallow vessel can only ever pretend to have any depth.
