Convenience and Compatibility

He was perfect for me,
wearing khaki shorts
sneakers without socks
and so was I.
New Balance ones,
neon green and gray.
He set his low carbohydrate breakfast bar down on the counter next to mine.
I kept looking at our ankles
as we stood in line
and they made me think
of beaches and pedicured toes.
I thought
I’d love to walk through wet sand with this man.

I thought about leaving my wheat bread, coffee and my Power bar right there on the counter.
Imagine?
Running after him

“I know these incredible docks
well, a wharf,
where sea lions sunbathe
and there’s this beach…
with sand.”
Palms up
like
What do you think?

He stands
with his keys and coffee in his hands
next to an SUV the color
of maraschino cherries
and glossy
like lips.
I cross my fingers
at my bravery,
hoping he’s the kind of man
who can appreciate
sunbathing
seal lions
and the sensation of sand between the toes.
