THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSENGER
The woman from Scunthorpe or Scarborough is doing a good job,
summoning up spirits at the Glasgow Spiritualist Church:
'The lady on the left, I have an older gentleman with me,
says he was a worker on the roads.
His name is ... Eric.'
The lady pleads ignorance,
doesn't know him; on to the next.
When will I be called? I don't think the dead are interested.
The older man whose name I forget thanks
the woman from Scunthorpe or Scarborough for her time.
A cold reading is when the medium makes it up
because there's nothing coming in from the other side.
We didn't have a cold reading, because a hall-light
came crashing down from the ceiling, just missing the speaker by inches.
The older man looked directly at me, saw my concern,
and suspicion left his face. We all had a fright for sure.
Laughing at the door with the man taking the hymn books
I think I'll be back next Sunday.
Acceptance is when your presence is welcomed by others.
Mediums and the afterlife have become a part of my world,
like Scunthorpe or Scarborough.
