Not quite a short story closer to a poem

Conversations With My Muse

Seeing as its one-thirty in the morning, and sleep, so far, has proved to be nothing more than an elusive concept, I’m not surprised when I look over at my overstuffed wingchair, and see him sitting there, waiting for me to acknowledge his presence. Ignorance is futile, so I sit up, pulling my robe even closer around me and running a hand through my already ruined hair before I look back at him again, and try not to look too expectant.
He says what he always does- “You called?”
“Yeah, (I try to keep the surliness out of my voice) about five hours ago...”
He gives me a long appraising look over the top of his glasses, laughs, and runs a hand through his hair, knowing full well what that will do to me.
“Hey, I never said we were exclusive-“
My glare cuts him off. “Like I’d want that” (so much for not sounding surly)
“Well, I don’t have to stay-“
He settles back in the chair.
“So, “he asks me, “what did you want, anyway..”
And we talk. Well, I talk, he listens, and just as I feel like my hand is about to fall off, he clears his throat and glances towards the window, and I notice that outside, the sky is just beginning to turn pink.
“Oh.” I sigh. “You have to go, right?”
He nods.
I sigh, again.
“Not exclusive..” he reminds me.
“Yeah, yeah.”
“But, you know how to contact me”-he grins, and just like that, he’s gone.
I lie back on the couch, and wait for sleep to claim me. Sometimes, unemployment has its perks.
