“… and swallows believing the horizon
to be a line they lift and drop.”
-- Jorie Graham

My workout walk across the expanse
Of Sherman Oaks Park this morning
Lifted the curtain of my June gloom
In a matchless display of synchronicity
Visited on a cool, sunless day of drill
In quest of endorphins to calm the nerves.
I noticed three swallows had joined me
To exercise their right to summer rays.
Amused, I thought to myself
These are and aren’t like Jorie Graham’s
Avian acrobats lifting and dropping
The horizon as if it were a line
Undulating in an extra-spatial matrix.
No, they flew low unlike swifts I’ve seen,
Almost at waist level circling me close
For a hundred meters, just out of reach,
Chasing each other unerringly
In a sort of mating ritual, I felt.
I knew they were showing off to me
Their existential task of obeying
The spirit of the law of Newton
Or whoever it was that got
All this inexplicable process started.
And as I traversed the panoply
Of fresh cut grass I realized
The birds were teaching me a lesson
Of life’s ups and downs of mood and fortune
And of a greater truth of our co-authorship
Of this existence by cooperating
With nature’s tumult of emotions
Expectant of approaching summer.
