Most of us are familiar with the term “Freedom of Religion”, but how about “Freedom from Religion”? This was written many years ago, before my upbringing-imposed religiosity was (fortunately) replaced by enlightened spirituality. It is neither intended to offend nor directed at any particular faith, being simply an expression of one not-so-uncommon viewpoint.

From onset of awareness,
at glitter-eyed behest
of robed religionists
our ancestors slicked grass red
with blood of innocents.

Gore-crusted millennia,
orgiastic epiphanies of slaughter
honoring mob-appeal divinities:
Baal, Dagon, Moloch,
Yaweh, Jesus, Allah;
death by boogeypriest
according to ritual:
burn, behead, garotte,
eviscerate and flay
heretical foes of control.

Yet to this very moment
bloated corpses pile;
Tehran turbans preach war,
Jerusalem hats preach hate,
Rome mitres preach intolerance.
Peering through voodoo masks,
wormy clerics suck upon souls,

hissing poison liturgies

of Damnation and Death.

Religion, as you so powerfully write, has always been a violent 'release' for society. We humans, as a species,
seem to need that. Human condition, I think it is called.
Thank you for framing it this way. With a new Pope expected
to 'fix' everything, we need to be reminded of religion's
history.

an awesome expression "Organized Religion" is truth...truth...
and more truths...boogiepriest!! I Love That!
in so many ways releasing oneself from anothers bar hold
which is what religion is in sorts (aka: my way is the only way)
makes waves in the family & generation(s) to rise above the confinement & permanence of it...
Voodoo however gets a bad wrap if you ask me
when actually it holds more core truth
than any religion...Traditional Voodoo is healing elements
& not meant to harm like its stigma quo
in movies and horror flicks
Religion can lead a positive direction too though
as it did for myself
but also the deeper voodoo spirit of my soul removed the prison bars
that religion(s) curses upon the free will to explore another alter.
Your words give such depths to ponder...as I do...
