The pains but yet joy of aging

 Then I laughed

I awake to breathe in that wonderful fresh air

Smiling as I do, but I always smile when I wake

I smiled too because my cat was standing on my chest staring

I smiled because he nuzzled my face

Then I laughed

Smart creatures, they know they own us

Then my smile broadened and I laughed again

I realized I am still on this side of the grass

Not that it’s a bad thing to be anywhere else

But others around me might be a wee bit upset over the sudden shock

Then I laughed

I smiled as I sat up and stretched and felt my old bones creak

And then I laughed

Where has my youth gone?

My mind still says 16, but my bones say otherwise

Then I laughed

Sitting up slowly, putting feet to floor

I take those first stiff steps like the mechanical toy

Until the motor kicks in

Look at me, I don’t look old

Then I laughed

Ah the hands of time, we wish to stop it

But it marches on

I robotically head to the kitchen to make coffee

Then I laughed

Making my coffee in the French press

Mmm how the aroma fills the air

I smiled

How those first luscious sips taste

And then you remind me how much I need my coffee,

before my mind is in gear

Then I laughed

Time waits for no one; laughter is the best medicine; these are the themes that come into mind as I read your verses, Carol. I do love the attitude expressed as well. Love and best wishes,

You'll know what old bones are when you reach my age! They let me know I am alive all the time.

I laughed too - just after you made me cry! Thank you. As for cats - they don't have owners - they have staff!

Very cute poetry, I can so relate to this. I don't have a cat but I do have my morning coffee and stretch...

Pretty much the way I start my mornings. But that is one lucky cat.
