Your pain is the cracking of the shell that once enclosed your heart. ~Lily of Lough Neagh~

 Abyss of Sorrows

There becomes a pain of knowing

Pain which swallows all of your essence

Nothing can cover what resides in the heart

Nothing can remove what resides in the soul

So you try to bring in memory

Stolen moments of happiness

A faint memory of what once was

But pain watches you like a hawk

Who swoops in tearing your flesh

Shred by shred until tethered

Slowly devouring fleshy strips

Gulping and swallowing to digest

Then feeds it to her young

Until you have been regurgitated

A mere pulp of what you once were

Yet the two little eyes that once shone

Sit upon the mass dull without shine

Bone by bone you are plucked

Dropped into the abyss of sorrows

Till you reach the desert of the dead

Chained unto the tree of death

A heart that once beat strong

Now tanned and stripped of moisture

Now lying aged dried and withered

The hawk has no mercy

She tears at the remaining strips

Until it’s completely engulfed

Only a mere pittance left

Struggling for life

Though withered and tethered

It seeks refuge of one dry leaf

Praying to be nourished once again

A most effective simile. I know the kind of pain that you describe via your verses in this poem, Carolee; I am intimate with it, sadly. Love and best wishes,

A terrible place to be and so tattered as described here, difficult for many to understand unless they have experienced this themselves.

I understand this kind of pain, my husband left me for a younger woman. Just packed and left leaving me to feel empty and in pain.

Anyone who does this to you should be shot! I hope this isn't about you Lilly. You're a great writer and we love all your wisdom and specially the love you show to others here in how you write.

Keep writing! I bet lots can relate to this, I'm glad I've never experienced it.

Oh beautiful soul dear lady Lily, I hope as some others do this is not a reflection upon yourself. Metaphorically written well to reflect someone who suffers greatly. I agree with Keith Rowley, then there comes rebirth.

Well done my dear lady Lily

I bow and tip my hat to you

Such a rich descriptive poem of the Abyss of sorrow.
This is so exceptional deep that every tear of the hawk is felt.

Brilliant Carolee, just in one word, BRILLIANT

Whoa! Double whoa!! A damning write, Carol, and one that the weak-hearted among us will have trouble . . . er . . . digesting. You have absolutely described the agony and abasement, even self abasement, which comes with someone being systematically destroyed lie by lie, cheat by cheat, until everything is sucked dry from the living dead, and is is such a thorough job that many never recover and live the remainder of their days a shell of who they once was.

A very sad write, hope it is not about you, Carol!

An intriquately woven tale of loss, it is my hope that this is a memory not some current pain to such a giving soul.
