This poem is about the birthing pains of a new nation.

No Going Back

If we could right every wrong,

We would not be earthlings bound,

Our lives would sing a different sound,

Far greater and more profound.

We cannot replace the soldiers gone,

Nor ravaged cities from wars of before,

We can only hope to replace such wrongs,

With disarmament plans and more.

And there is not a place on this earth,

Where the indigenous people still live,

Who have not suffered the fate, the curse.

Of new ways, strange people with little to give.

Their land has been seized,

Their culture stripped bare,

The alcohol, the white’s man’s disease,

Some of the shame we all must share.

But there’s no going back to primitive ways,

Our pioneers suffered too in a country untamed,

And the march of progress is here to stay,

There is no point in placing blame.

A mixed race we are now, with equal rights,

From Stone Age in such a short span,

To work and to vote, equality with whites,

Hopefully united for the sake of our land.

If we could right every wrong,

We would not be earthlings bound,

Our lives would sing a different song,

Far greater and more profound.

Sturdy awareness in these words: "...strange people with little to give". That says a great deal. And I enjoy your "With disarmament plans and more." There is hope in there. ~~ Diana
