They say there’s a cave

Up in the mountains so high

Up past the tall timbers

Half way to the sky

Where Ghost horses stay

And wait for their orders

They wait for the arrival

Of the great Shawnee warriors

Ghost horses of grey

With manes coarse and black

Seeking the riders

To take their land back

They snort fire and steam

And pace while they wait

Prisoners of time

That long for the chase

Ghost horses tall and mighty

Like thunder they run

They’ll never know peace

Till their mission is done

The Great Spirit commands them

To run with the clouds

Till one day Shawnee warriors

Will make them once again proud

Their echoes you’ll hear

At night through the canyons

Pounding the clouds

As they race unabandoned

Herded together

By fate and by curse

Waiting their chance

To get back on earth

There are spirits in the mountains

There are supernatural forces

There are warriors and chiefs

Who’ll ride these Ghost Horses

With purple skies at twilight

They’ll return in the haze

And you’ll hear their hoof beats

As they race by their graves

I love this poem, it reminds me of a forgotten part of history, a very wonderful sentiment.
