Old timber on a bed of brown,
Decaying hulks from days gone by,
Ashes to ashes,
Dust to dust,
Like me
And those I love.
The river rolls languidly,
Bearing the knowledge
Of the ages.
Listen to her song;
Gentle in peace,
But otherwise,
No friend you care to know
In anger,
So unpredictable is she.
The sky rains fire
At night,
And peaceful nature quakes.
What maniacal force
Resents us so,
To spin the wind
In our sleep?
I watched as the ocean
Claimed a soul,
In silence,
Staking Earth’s claim
To all that walk upon it,
Or venture near her edge,
Drifting off into the black of night;
A wordless goodbye,
Flailing,
As do we all,
Failing,
As do we all,
As the sky rains fire
At night.

This one hits right in the heart...
I love the expression of the sky raining fire. This seems to have a cathartic feel to it, as well as a spiritual meaning...
Love the poem.

| This poem is great! I love the lines: What maniacal force/resents us so/to spin the wind/in our sleep and I watched as the ocean/claimed a soul/in silence. That came as a surprise. Thanks for sharing! |

Frank-ly, I find your doubling up of "Flailing, as do we all" to be brilliant-- it underlines the implications-- we read it twice, and get a second, deeper meaning.
A haunting write that drifts into the mind, and wedges there somewhere between memories, and spiritual significance.
And again-- those beautiful slant rhymes--sounding harmonious, and not taking from the message.
Superb, as always. God Bless you-- Peace. --Charlie |
