I don't know where this one came from except to say that I have a friend I was missing really badly, an honest unfancy soul, kind of a grump actually, while I was standing around in a roomful of predators and phonies. Thinking of that friend saved me from sliding across that thin line between Reality and Artifice.
Thank GOD for sarcastic grumpy know-it-alls! They keep me real.

Hot autumn night, lamplights cast shadows,
Muted jazzy music, sophisticated indoors,
alone on a balcony, breezy and cold,
traffic noises ride thermals, hissing sea,
another city, different faces, same regrets.
False cheer, bright lights,
party games and laughter, hiding despair,
rumors and flirtations, desperate hopes,
watching lions gather 'round their prey,
watching the prey beg to be eaten.
I drink the cool
from my glass
and I can see
and taste a
on my tongue.
Someone tells a joke that falls flat.
Someone else confesses a sin
and is met by laughter.
Someone else learns the truth too late.
My champagne tastes like liquid ash,
the remains of a love and a life
that I'm burning away
as I play a role
amongst a too bright

I prefer, and have been affectionately referred to as "crusty"... usually followed by a very versatile four letter word.
