"One if by Land, Two if by Sea;
I, on the opposite Shore will be!"

Any idea from Whence Cometh said Quote?

Perhaps another Hint?

"T'was the Eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five,
and hardly a man is now Alive,
that remembers that Famous Day and Year!"

Did you get it yet? if not, here is the LINK -

http://www.nationalcenter.org/PaulRevere'sRide.html

Go and read it all - see what you THINK!

By sheer coincidence, after reading it just now -
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow used two words therein - ROOFS and HOOFS - uncanny?

"Listen my children and you shall hear,
of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere ... "

A Truly Great Tribute to a Truly Great Patriot!

I wonder if that Bloody Brit, ANDY - ever read this?

"Touche, Monseigneur Pussycat!"

PLURALS

How come Hoof becomes Hooves,
But Roof is not Rooves?
Half becomes Halves,
And Calf becomes Calves,
Yet there is no Valf for Valves?

I and E

“I before E, except after C, as in Receive,
Or when followed by G, as in Weigh.”
NOTE: Exception is SIEGE!

Fife is a Musical Instrument,
Kind of like a Flute -
And Fief is a Feudal Land,
Farmed by a Serf - an Enslaved Galoot!

A Thief is one who Steals,
Robs, or Thieves,
While Grief is a Sadness,
Expressed by one who Grieves!

A Chief is a Leader,
One who Achieves,
Top Billing from Injuns,
Those who Believe!

Belief is a Feeling of Certainty,
An Expression of Faith,
While a young cow is a Heifer,
Who’s never had a Calf!

A Guy Name of Sutherland,
Has a Moniker of Kiefer,
And Old AD Ed Matlack,
Prefers Cannabis, or Reefer!

An Archaic Adverb - Lief -
Means Readily or without Reluctance,
While Liege is a Sovereign -
Demanding Service and Sustenance!

For Aches and Pain -
How do you spell Relief?
Just Pop some Pills,
Doing so with Lief!

So - does that mean That
Re-lief is Re-doing Lief?
Kind of like a Second Act?
Is this Fiction, or a Fact?

Lieu means in Place or Stead Of,
So, a Lieutenant is One
Who Acts as an Assistant To,
Or in Place Of!

So, How do I end this, let’s See -
Consider the Abbreviation - i.e.
It stands for the Latin, id est -
“That is to Say” - Thus ends our Word-Play!

Tisk-tisk... But Longfellow knew all about word play and cadence... gotta love your word twists too. Some of them I'd never considered before... love the relief line... and the lieutenant. Except, when I listen to a Brit movie... why do they pronounce it "lefftenant"? Just wondering. --Charlie

He did, but you know them bloody Brits; he changed it all around to his liking.

And you've penned a classic here!

I always thought the plural of "spouse" should be "spice"--Great fun and I wish I had had your poems to present to students when I taught. I might have made even the "too cool to care" kids laugh!
