A Rain Forest

* * *

In a rain forest
when the crush of daily torrent
falls upon the green of all that grows,
birds yet sing their songs
in defiance of the intrepid flow.
Their sound is heard
beyond the patter of rain on leaves
or the rumble of thunder rolling by.
Then might of the deluge
overpowers a bird's gentle song.
The trees fall silent.

Now is heard only the clatter
of a steady stream progressing,
bringing replenishment for all...
a cycle of blessing.
Birds huddle,
soggy in their feathered dress,
waiting for the rain to end.

A miracle happens
and the downpour ceases.
Even as drops fall from the trees,
birds tease the breeze
with timid cries for the sun to shine.
Song rings out more strident
as they test belief that the rain has gone.
On branches high and places low,
in the ritual of rebirth,
birds spread their sodden wings
and turn to face the sun.
