Awareness
A cool arm round my shoulder
Comforting, when in dire pain
I open my eyes, no one is there
Tricks of my mind, again?
The smell of burning wood smoke
Warm weather, the hearth is bare
Yet, the smell pervades the room
Tricks of my mind, to share?
Entering at the doorway
The strong smell of freesia’s sweet
Yet not a bloom in sight
Tricks of my mind, now greet?
I’m in bed, ready to sleep
In the dark, there is no light
My hair is stroked by gentle hand
Tricks of my mind, at night?
Aware of warmth near me
As I sit in my study’s chair
Is this a trick of my mind?
Or is someone standing there?
A piece of music playing
Images flash before my eyes
A memory, but quite unknown
Bringing with it tears and sighs
One day I will fully understand
But for now, what is, must be
The spirit world can connect
Though, as yet, I cannot see
I recognise who comes to visit
For each one I have a face
Those who have loved me
And now gone to a higher place
They bring hope as well as comfort
That we shall meet again, one day
They have not left and forgotten
They simply could not stay
