The gift of astral travel is bestowed by the spirits on exceptional women. Dayak women who defy the tabu and attempt to travel without first winning approval from the spirit world fall into layu, a state of lifelessness from which they never recover.

The vast river captures me,

The current, white water over rocks spurs me on.

I mount the rising moon.

The starry sky lights my way.
