“It is a wholesome and necessary thing

For us to turn again to the earth,

And in the contemplation of her beauties,

To know of wonder and humility.”

Rachel Carson

A solitary walk in the deep forest

On a December’s day towards dark

Wondering what marvels I might see

Perhaps a rabbit or a playful meadow lark

As I crest a steep snow covered hill

I see her poised there peering at me

And what a real beauty she truly is

My wandering soul now fills with glee

I very quickly stop in my tracks

She stands silently in the snow

It seems that neither one of us

Is in a very big hurry to go

I stand gazing into her eyes

She stands peering into mine

She is truly a very regal beauty

A creature of the wood divine

We both stand there for several minutes

Then she slowly turns and goes her way

A memory now forever etched in my mind

Of a real woodland beauty I met yesterday

I truly hope and pray that she fares well

And that our paths will cross again one day

This very regal woodland beauty of the forest

Our chance encounter uplifting in so many ways

A true moment of magic...

Isn't it magic when mother nature stops man and deer in their tracks to scrutinize one another. I've had my days when I'm awed by nature too and I wouldn't trade it for a walk in Time's Square.

Splendid poem and pic! Isn't it awesome when you have a couple minutes to feel the connection, as if you both know that over eons you've known each other. It is a true gift when that happens.

ED... Yes, another of God's creatures, so beautiful to behold, and you did her great honor!

Two Mondays ago, I was on my way home from shooting pool - that's the only thing I SHOOT, ceptin' the BREEZE! On a desolate stretch of Curtis Avenue, in Curtis Bay area of Baltimore CITY, no less - the car in front of me hit his brakes, so did I - a WHITE-TAIL ran across the 4-lane road, across the railroad tracks, and paralled the course of a parked train.

At 67, I had never ever seen a DEER in the boundaries of the city! Really hungry, I might guess? It is an industrial area though, so I suppose there are woods thereabout somewhere.

Bless you! my prayers are with you! this is close to an Angelic experience, aren't their innocent eyes so deep and beautiful, and trusting knowing this is a friend she is looking at, not someone that sees her as a piece of meat only, forgive me this no time to rave, but a time of much joy, and this joy will stay in your memory forever as you said, I would just simple add, that you are blessed,

Beautiful, Ed. We used to see deer in Ohio, especially in Winter. So elegant, so beautiful, so gentle. We also used to go to a deer park and feed the hundreds of deer there. They would just surround you, wanting to get a treat...and I was more than happy to oblige. (Haven't thought about that in YEARS.) Thanks for the memories, well done, Ed.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
