“I realized that if I had to choose,

I would rather have birds,

Than airplanes.”

Charles Lindbergh,

Shortly Before His Death

I was standing outdoors

It was shortly after dawn

Enjoying another new day

With my dogs on our lawn

I looked up to the heavens

And, I saw them in the sun

They were all heading north

Spring Migration had begun

I first learned all about them

As a young child, so long ago

From a nature-loving instructor

“Your neighbors, you should know.”

They are amongst the oldest

Living birds on Mother Earth

And, watching them head north

Always fills my heart with mirth

For many millions of years on this planet

In Spring, they’ve returned to the northland

Their numbers, very sadly, are now dwindling

So spotting them, for me, is always truly grand

They make numerous stopovers on their journey

In the wetlands and marshes, along their long way

But we’ve now drained, so many of their rest stops

From the skies, they now see steel and concrete, today

Ancient instinct and perseverance, urge them on, to their nesting grounds

Following the same route of their ancestors, up to Wisconsin and Michigan

These magnificent Sandhill Cranes have seen so much change, in 200 years

I pray they don’t follow the path of the Buffalo, which we brought to an end

I looked up to the heavens,

And I spotted them in the sun;

I was thrilled they were still there,

One more Spring Migration had begun.

Angels flying, omnious sign, there are less and less of them, of course lakes of oil instead of water don't help. Great one, great one! Jasmin Horst
