“Even the woodpecker owes his success,

To the fact that he uses his head,

And keeps pecking away,

Until he finishes the job.”

Coleman Cox

I had now retreated to the deep wood

Life, had really been getting me down

When we heard knocking, before dawn

It was such a loud, sleep-depriving sound

My dogs had all jumped up, in unison

A strange, eerie, pounding, on our door

I nervously peered over at the alarm clock

It was, to my dismay, only a little past four

Jumping out of bed, racing to the door

My dogs all bounding along, beside me

Who could be pounding on it at this hour

It had to be some sort of dire, emergency

I threw open the door and rushed outside

There wasn’t a single soul, standing there

My dogs sensed something, up on the roof

And now, to its peak, all six of us, did stare

It was an early rising, door knocking, woodpecker

Who now stared down, at human and canines, below

This little Yellow-Shafted Flicker, seemed so very sage

As if he were just trying to tell us, ‘it’s time to get up and go’

And now suddenly, I was feeling, a whole lot better, about life

I quickly dressed, and we all went for a stroll, in the northwood

It often seems to take some sort of nonhuman neighbor of mine

To make me realize, that simply being alive, is pretty darn good

I had now retreated to the deep wood,

Life, had really been getting me down;

When a tiny flicker, had come a calling,

And, it made such a life-affirming sound.

Fab. Everyday I hear the woodpeckers chatting away in the forest. And and and also feeding from the garden. Th male has a red crest upon his head. His wife is rather plain. lol.

Yup, living by the forest is great, even if fox cubs keep me awake.

Oh for cryin out loud, quit yer whinin' about life and its down times...and running away never really helps in the end of things...think of what you got, that great wife, the dogs and cats and your health (other than the mental part) & good friends and brothers like Edvark & JD/me...boy, we got to coddle you all the time...wait till Georg reads this, then you are going to hear it from him and then he'll tell ma...then you'll be in for it for sure...Ed

The interruptions of life I always find to be the greatest learning experiences. This poem is evident of that. Thanks Ed!

Yes I think that all too often we tend to choose gloom and doom over faith and hope. Loved this one.

I am always up early, but it has to be a really good reason to wake up at 4am, and by the way, have you ever tried catching a Woodpecker, I've been told it's pretty hard.

Cheers,
Dan
