“Why did the chicken cross the road?

Because he knew you would feed him.”

My Nasty Spouse

I was walking home after searching for another stray

When a wily critter ran across the road towards me

He was feathered and white with huge black feet

Was this purely a chance meeting or my destiny?

I soon stopped in my tracks, and I waited for him

He rushed up to me, as if we were long lost friends

Oddly enough, he now began pecking at my pockets

I immediately began smiling and howling without end

How had this clever bird known I always carried nuts and seeds

He must have been spying on me, when I tossed them to squirrels

I now took some out, offered them to him, and he ate very hungrily

As a squad car now raced up, and the officer’s taunts were unfurled

“Hey, Buddy! Is that your chicken that you’re illegally prancing all around?

We’ve gotten numerous calls about a deranged bird terrorizing the citizens!”

I couldn’t help but laugh as I said “Officer, I have never met this bird before!”

And soon, we both began laughing, as this wily chicken clucked without end

He and I, and a third police officer, who had very quickly arrived at the scene

Soon began ringing doorbells, and asking residents, if their chicken had escaped

After a very long time, an embarrassed man finally admitted, it was his daughter’s

The chicken returned home, the officers left, and I now had another story to relate

“Why did the chicken cross the road?

Because he knew you were an easy mark!”

My Extremely Nasty Spouse

Only one problem--He doesn't look like a HE to me!
I once entered my pet chicken in a pet parade. (My sister took her duck) Another kid was bragging about what HIS chicken could do, but I quietly placed mine on my shoulde, where it liked to perch for a ride, and I got the award.
Thanks for a fun poem.
