We are very sadly finding more and more

Of these tortured animals, every day now,

All across America, and all across the world

“Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard

The life of any living creature as worthless,

Is in danger of also arriving at the idea of worthless human lives.”

Albert Schweitzer

What a sad species we’ve become

We all condone cruelty and abuse

Another example, only yesterday

Another abused dog, on the loose

Emaciated, scarred, and abandoned

So cruelly used, as ‘dog fighting bait’

Then, dumped in an alley, like garbage

A miserable, painful death, now her fate

Luckily for her, someone who still cares

Took pity on her, before it was too late

She has been rushed to an animal hospital

Hopefully to heal, and to gain some weight

People like me, are now becoming more ashamed

Of the way our own species is living life, these days

Hardly anyone, is advocating an end to animal cruelty

In fact, we all now seem to condone it, in so many ways

More and more dog fighting rings are being formed

More and more children are torturing helpless kittens

More and more people are buying dogs from puppy mills

And, none of this seems to matter, to citizens or politicians

In fact, it sadly seems to people like me, we now glorify abuse

A convicted dog fighter, is being praised, as an NFL Super Star

A politician, who brags about shooting wolf pups from helicopters

Many want to be our next President – no cruelty seems to go too far

What a truly abysmal example we adults are now setting for our children

We are indeed teaching them that the lives of other creatures are worthless

Animal Abuse now abounds, it’s being taught, it’s becoming commonplace

And, as Albert Schweitzer predicted, human life worthlessness, will be next

“If you have men who will exclude

Any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity,

You will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”

St. Francis of Assisi

No words can describe the horror in that picture!

Please read my update on "Eyes Crusted Shut: A Kitten's Heartbreaking Story (Part Two)" ... kitty is blind for the rest of his life, but things are starting to look up; there's hope for the little guy ...

Powerfully penned; well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your freind in Texas, Karen Lynn. :(

As St Frank alludes to, it has always been this way. It shouldn't be, but it is and, as with warfare, it always will be. With any of Gods creatures. Including, Thanksgiving turkey.

This is a stirring call to all human beings but only those who are human will respond. Cruelty to animals must end. Thanks my friend, Ed. I have missed your writes sooooo much

This is tearing me apart Ed. I can only imagine how cruel some people can be, do they not have a heart or feelings. The law is too easy on them.

Is selfishness the prime cause, me first, never mind the other, it hurts me with their pain to bother, yes millions now, of pictures like this, I too, once in a while have to close my eyes, can't take it anymore. Yet in the end, it is a beautiful Mensch like you, and our other friends that care still, that gives hope. We are screening a film called "Earthlings" at the Carleton University on the 24, try to reach the younger generation, and also to get a feed back, a response to questions proferred, anyone that cares about animals and the world today, should make an effort to see it and be informed, it is highly rated by the way. Ed, one sweet creature at a time, or millions if possible, and with your expose, and heart felt poem, and I agree with Christine, it's one of your very best, it still happens, and you make more of it happen, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for being such a Mensch, a real human, wherefrom the word humane has it supposed origin. Bless you a million times!

I think this is one of your most powerful poems, Ed. I have tried to report puppy mills before and it is very difficult to get any action, at least in my state. I walked into a puppy mill by accident once and sat down on the steps and proceeded to throw up. I just could not take the dogs being abused like that. Call after call got me nowhere.

Oh my God! Crying again, Ed! Bless this beautiful little creature...I've said it a million times and I'll say it again...the more I know of people, the closer I want to be to animals!!! People (at least a great many of them) just aren't worth knowing! How indeed can humans be so cruel? Thanks for putting this out there...although it's deeply painful to MUST be heard!
