“I frequently tramped eight or ten miles,

Through the deepest snow,

To keep an appointment,

With a beech-tree, or a yellow birch,

Or an old acquaintance among the pines.”

Henry David Thoreau

Last night’s Snow Blizzard of 2011

Did not break the 1967 snow record

But my spouse now believes our walk

To the grocery store, was quite absurd

Our dogs woke us up at about 3 AM

They all wanted to frolic, in the snow

But our backdoor wouldn’t even open

So we had to dig it out, don’t you know

It will probably take us most of today

To dig our vehicles, out of our garage

About twenty inches of snowdrift, there

With 50 mph arctic winds – what a barrage

And wouldn’t you know it, we were out of milk

And my dogs were all pouting – no more Milkbones

I told my spouse, we should walk to the grocery store

I told her it would be fun, and I didn’t want to go alone

I informed her that Thoreau would often walk many miles

Through deep snowdrifts, just to visit with his favorite trees

I told her, that it would be good exercise and quite invigorating

I guess I got carried away and told her how romantic it would be

I am very lucky I guess, that she was still in a Blizzard Stupor

She had forgotten the grocery store was quite a distance away

I tried to convince her, that we should sing while we trudged on

But I think that she’ll be giving me ‘The Silent Treatment’ today

At least my slobbering dogs are all happy now,

As they are now, all chomping away, on their treats;

“Uh, Sweetie, can you hurry up and finish your cereal,

We have to dig out the garage – now won’t that be neat?!”

©2011, I’m Gonna Sing While I Shovel, Mr. Ed,

But If I Know My Wife, She’s Goin Back to Bed

I haven't had a snow walk in a long time. In Alaska I snowshoed quite often. When I lived in the Sierra one year we had 42 feet. You had to be very careful of the tree well. You could slide into one and have a real bear of a time crawling out. Patrick

Ed, it sounds like you are very persuasive, or Sweetie is very understanding, or perhaps a little of each. Enjoyable reading,

You tell this with great charm and quiet humour

Very fine indeed.
