ďI know well enough that there have been dogs so loving

That they have thrown themselves into the same grave

With the dead bodies of their masters;

Others have stayed upon their masters' graves

Without stirring a moment from them,

And have voluntarily starved themselves to death,

Refusing to touch the food that was brought them.Ē

Miguel de Cervantes

Sadness fills my heart today

My beloved old aunt is gone

Thankfully, I was there with her

When she left for the great beyond

And so was her loyal old canine

Her Daisy, refused to leave her side

I had to drag her away from her master

As my auntís remains were carried outside

The look of immense sorrow in her eyes,†evident

Her efforts to go with my aunt, so stoically valiant

If I hadnít restrained her, she would have followed

No matter where her beloved deceased master went

Some claim that animals do not share our emotions

I believe that they grieve, as deeply as we humans do

I know that they feel joy and sadness and love and loss

My auntís faithful companion now feels immense grief too

I promised my aunt that I would now care for her Daisy

But I sadly know that her life now will never be the same

Since yesterday, Daisy has refused to eat or drink anything

My heart breaks for her, I can feel her great sorrow and pain

I'm sorry for your loss, Ed. And for Daisy's loss too. I truly believe dogs grieve too. My first dog died shortly after the death of my father. He was so heart broken as the rest of us were and wouldnt eat. He was never the same. It was difficult for me to get another dog until a few months ago. When we are snuggling, I always wonder what he is thinking about. Heart touching poem, Ed ... Take care ...

Once again, you remind us of the bond we have with dogs. This one is very special because it connects your love of dogs with the love of your aunt. So beautifully penned that I hope it gets spread far and wide.

You have my sympathy and prayers, Ed. You must have been close to your Aunt; otherwise, she would not have entrusted her pet to you.
I'll pray for Daisy, too, because I believe our pets are beloved by the Lord as well as by us.

Sincerely,
Connie

Having had the experience of marriage failure and the sorrow of my Lab selfishly being made to remain with my ex, only to die in his sleep within two months, well, made me think as this poem did.

Yes they do grieve, I feel for her. They know death, as do cats. They become depressed just as we do over the loss of loved ones.

I will keep Daisy in prayer darlin'

Hugs to her

I know this about dogs, as I was delivering medications to a guy and he had a really friendly husky named Motley and when the guy was getting close to death the dog seemed to do the same, drank water but wouldn't eat and the sicker the man got, the same with the dog...e

Dear Friend,

So sorry for your loss of your aunt, a great lady no doubt.
As for Daisey and pets like her her dedication is beyond what most people would do.
I for one lost my first wife to cancer. My dedication was staying by her side through the chemo, radiation and removal of both breast.
Did you know many husbands leave their wives after they have a breast removed? What kind of dedication is that? Many would be better off having a dog for a companion.
This goes without saying that almost everyone should have at least one pet. The amount of love and friendship from the heart of a pet runs deep. I have yet to see one person dive into a grave of a loved one. If it's common with pets they are indeed the better species. Amen!
