A poetic story of attempted suicide and love.

Beautiful baby girl comes home to stay
To big brother and Mommy and Daddy
To parents that fight and a brother who is mean
She starts running before she can even walk
From and uncaring Mother, a Father who drinks
And a perverted brother who thinks she is prey

She runs away…
She runs from pubescent rage which flows like menstrual blood
To mischief and rebellion and crime
To a Girl’s Home and therapy wards
Where she is told that there is something wrong
In a forbidden and desperate love affair
She runs away…
She runs from homophobic shouts hurling
“Bulldyker”, “Lezzy”, and “Clit-licker”
To an uncaring, unwanted marriage so young – only 17
To a husband who likes to box without any gloves
With a woman too weak to fight back
She runs away…
She runs from a tyrannical beast
From sex which was always forced
To alleys, shelters, and soup kitchens
Free clinics and clingy preachers
She can’t run away…
She can’t run away anymore
There is nowhere left to go
Except a step from a bridge handrail
A hand clasps her finger
Another hand holds her arm
A whisper reaches her ears
“Be free to be who you are
Have the courage to finally see.”
The arms pull her down and encircle her
“Love who you want to love
Let no one be your judge”
The arms hold her tight and warm
“Don’t let despair and desperation consume you.”
She turns around as tears stain her face
She finds the woman she loves staring back
“Will yourself to find the strength to love
With no reservation, for love can set you free
Be the person you were meant to be
And to Hell with all who see
All you have to do is believe
Please, baby, believe in me”
She smiles at her love and tells her
She will believe in her forever
“Courage can bring you love
And love can set you free
Beautiful baby girl come home

Let your Faith take you home to stay.”
