Poems are puzzles with rhythm and time
You read them and find out what the poet had in mind
If an image is provided then the puzzle’s half done
Literature and Art all wrapped up in one
Songs for the mind, food for the soul
The writer produces an experience, whole
Sometimes they’re rhyming, sometimes they’re not
Some give a little and some give a lot
Often they’ll plant little seeds of delight
Or teach us about what is wrong and what’s right
The poet will reach out and speak from within
Using words as a paintbrush to draw us all in
They’ll bring us great tales of a land far away
Or share what they found at the end of a day
There are old ones or new ones or short ones or long
But always they’ll sing you a personal song
The topics are endless. The themes are astute
Some speak of sadness and others, refute
Sometimes you’ll love them and sometimes you won’t
You’ll find some that move you and others that don’t
It’s all in the set of our minds on the day
A poem read later could suddenly convey
Its story or notion in a different light
Bringing all kinds of new-found ideal’s into sight
Poetry can give crucial words added strength
Carrying messages the world’s breadth and length
Singing its songs loud and clear for all time
Showing the world what was in someone’s mind.
