Broken-Down Angel

Written after seeing a young girl panhandling

Sweet sixteen never kissed but so well-used
Dealing with your Jekyll and your Hyde
Best piece you've had
Smiles but her eyes are sad
Wonders will she ever be a bride

C'mon Mr., won't you buy what she has for sale
Fifty bucks and she can make you smile
She may be thin and gaunt
But she'll give you what you want
A schoolgirl and a hot piece of tail

A broken down angel so young and sweet
Swallows her pride and you just to get a bite to eat
You don't stop to think while she is giving you head
She's somebody's daughter, and should be home in bed

She thinks: Mother, what has become of me
And life is hard and it can be so unjust
So it’s up and down this block
She has learned to walk the walk
Driven to it by her Daddy's lust

Little sister, come and take my hand
You can stay here with me tonight
I want to take you from the street
Give you a place to rest your feet
In the morning we'll find a way to make it right

A broken-down angel makes me want to weep
Watching her now while she's fast asleep
I hope I can find a way, a way to make her see
That this ain't the price she must pay to be free

She said: Maybe you're right, it just could be
You know I have always hoped there was some way
And you let me use your comb
You made me feel at home
So if you'll let me, I think I'd like to stay

A broken-down angel smiling up at me
Daring to dream dreams of what she could be
She says she is thinking she might go back to school
A broken-down angel, but nobody's fool
