Life's Ups and Downs. . .

Sentimental Journey
                       David Rumer

I rushed headlong and put my faith
In promises of tomorrow.
Mere fickle schemes that flew by night,
Leaving only grief and sorrow.

I watched apparent triumphs fade
To nothing, amid life's gambles.
Until, afraid to dare and do,
All my dreams lay strewn in shambles.

And when my worthless ship came in
With splintered mast and tattered sail
Shipwrecked esteem alone remained,
As I strove on to no avail.

But then, new treasures came to me.
My fousrsome brood, the girls and boy.
Who brought me pride, strength to go on,
Restoring happiness and joy.

Now, when I go to my reward,
And, all my battles have been fought,
I'll join that endless caravan,
And, this old world will owe me naught.
