did you have a good time
i did too
people are going to ask
they won't believe the truth
oh my god
did i do that
we laugh
i flip my hat on
and lower my head
no one will believe the truth
i smile a crooked smile
knowing that what you did
unintentionally
leaving behind marks
will be questioned
as will i
well there goes that shirt
the blood is mine
we laugh again
it's a good thing
we are adults
in america
not high
not drunk
so they don't try
to arrest you thinking
you hurt me
because of how i look

and we didn't even
engage
i those sorts
of things

that's why i am not ashamed

now you see
now you know
why i can't be who i am
why i can't let it out

passion
real and raw
painful aching
sweet
surrender
release
of the soul
eruptions
fire
rain

it took out the dinosaurs maybe
but the search for answers
goes on

so maybe one day
you will read me
or about me anyway
in Time magazine
after I have been long gone

surely someone will come along
and try to explain this
and what the markings meant
or why the artist painted me
the way he did
smiling or not
him or i

but mark my words
no one knows but i
the truth

don't touch it
it hurts
why would it hurt there
we never had sex
good thing
if this is what happens
after intellectual intercourse
then touching mouths
skin
and letting hands roam
i might not be able to
smile anymore

god if you could only see
what my mind feels like

what can i make of this
what will the world remember

to live
to have passion
dreams
insight
hope
love
determination
isn't enough

i am so much
more
than you see
but i know it won't matter
until it's gone
to anyone else
other than those
who burned in the fire
felt the quake
survived the war
and the man who
reads the magazine

or poem
as it be
