Momma’s Red Cowgirl Boots

When momma passed on
And we kids gathered ‘round,
We sorted through her things.
So many memories we found.

There were trinkets and photos
That she always held so close.
She’d hold them and smile,
When a smile she wanted most.

Though we are all now grown,
We found our eyes filled with tears,
When we saw the boxes filled
With the drawings from our childhood years.

The one thing that we found,
Kept deep under the bed,
Was a pair of cowgirl boots.
And what’s more…they were red.

Now momma always dressed
With a sense of great class.
But these boots belonged to a woman
Who liked to show a little sass.

This couldn’t be the woman
That spent her life caring
For her children and her family.
There’s something she wasn’t sharing.

We found a photo of her
Tucked deep within one of the boots.
She was a woman smiling so big
One who liked to holler and hoot.

So now we know her
In a way that we never had.
She had a life before us,
Before our family, before our dad.

I took those boots and photo
So that I’d never forget.
Live life, hoot and holler
But don’t ever regret.

Or when you leave this world,
Those who are left to pick through
The things you’ve left behind
May find someone they never knew.
