Two Deaths in the Family

stroke

struck twice in the family
both did not survive
both died
grief to the family

momma lay dying
in that hospital bed
each day going further and further away
her loveliness lost
to wrinkles and despair and sad, sad eyes
looking at us
demanding for us to do something
after five months she quit breathing
medical expertise
started her breathing again
to lie there
her eyes hating us all
after six more months of hell
she finally left this world

Scooter, our old three-legged dog
made out better
she only spent overnight
comatose
her eyes, as were momma's
asking us for help
the next day
we took her to this place
she was gingerly put upon a table
cried over, petted
told she was a good dog
and set free

Life is precious, it's true! So, when the time for reckoning comes, why do we show more respect and compassion to our animal friends than to our human ones?

I’m already saving pills for when my time comes, I just hope I will have the ability to recognize it when it gets here.

Nice one Jerry. Dick

Sorry for your loss. Animals have it so much better because we give them the grace of death. In my beliefs your mother is now in a much better space. It is only the living that torture themselves. There is no right way or wrong way in which death occurs. It is just another experince we go through in the experience of life.

Compassionate and TRUE feelings expressed with veracity and subtle grace. Eyes are indeed the windows to the inner life that so often refrains from expressing itself for fear of misunderstanding. Here, all that was left was the simple understanding of helplessness, which you obviously heeded and understood. Well done.

We long so much to hold onto the ones we love
it is a selfish act because we do not want to lose them.
We will do anything to hold onto them,
even when the loved ones are ready to go.

However, she did not hate all of you...
stroke is a vicious thing rendering the brain helpless
reforming it into something it never was before. I know
my Aunt had a stroke, and a woman who was gentle became
a truck driver in words. At the same time saw herself
in an earlier era.

We show more human kindness to our pets, but we have a different attachment there. We know their time here will be shorter an it's expected so we give them much more grace. Family is a different matter and we cling to them fiercely for they are the ones who
raised and nurtured us in this respect.

Painful memories Jerry, but a wonderful comparison
on human nature and how it is viewed.

Isn't it a shame how we can be humane to our pets when the time comes and yet our loved ones must suffer because society deems it so....I can sure relate to this one, my friend....
