Oh Rita....

I want to consume you
in my dreams but
You never stay long enough.
You just began your nightly
visits after my fifty years of grieving
your death.

We are in the third grade,
segregation long gone.
I enter the classroom
and there you are.
I hug you while my sobs
echo down the halls.

Agony mixed with the joy
of seeing you again.

We go to the beach and play
in foamy waves.
We traverse our desires,
wherever they take us.

We cling to each other
and explore every corner that was
your forbidden ground
when you were a living Black child.

Oh Rita, how I wish you could
see the changes.

Janet this is fantastic! It brought back memories of a similar friendship I had, but Hope (her name) Didn't die we moved to another town, and lost touch. I'll never forget her though. Thanks for sharing, you do this personal relationship poetry so well Janet.I wish I could;-)!

I think that she would be happy with the changes...no doubt she smiles down on her childhood friend and knows that because of people with hearts as big as yours, things indeed HAVE changed.

what a unique and emotionally powerful poem about segregation / integration, Janet. I'd like to think all the Ritas see the changes and somehow spark our hearts to effect the ones that remain unfulfilled. Dawn
