I wrote this poem to my best friend after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought long and hard for 10 years before she died. I lost her 7 years ago this mothers day. I miss her everyday.....we we're best friends for 26 years.

There will be days

The light will flicker and fade

There will be many times you feel afraid

But deep inside a fire must burn

And only then will you learn

The friends who care

Your empathy they long to share

If only you dare

To spread your wings and fly

Your eyes must be turned toward the sky

For all the strength you hold inside

And for every tear you have cried

Through faith and love,  you will abide

We've been friends for many years

The roads we've traveled,  we fought to endure

Life's changes we took in stride

Man,  what a roller coaster ride

But we've managed to find a way to smile

By giving each other confidence to go that extra mile

There is one thing I'd like to confess

And Angels wings,  I have caressed

If before me you forego

There is something I must bestow

You've been more like a sister,  than a friend in my mind

And in life's journey that's one thing you almost never find.

Love ya, girl

Karen

This is so personal I feel like I'm prying just to read it. I hope your words helped her get through her ordeal.

I haven't been to your site before, but when looking at the new poetry on AD, I knew I had to read this poem. First, the poem is loving and well written, second, I had the exact same scenario with my childhood friend that died at fifty. The loss was agonizing, but I knew she was out of pain and in a good place. I was with her the night she died. I will never forget the sweetness of our friendship; I miss her every day.
