Above and Beyond the Call of Beauty

Above and Beyond the Call of “Beauty”…

We color our hair,

The wrinkles we have, become spared,

We cover our bald spots,

We use cream on age spots,

We replace our teeth,

And exercise till we are tight,

Is this vanity or something right?

My fat hangs over the front,

My butt makes a soft surface,

My long hair needs cutting,

My beard does need a trimming,

My glasses are scratched,

My blue eyes fading from age,

Told am I how much I look like a sage…

We can take pills to make us thinner, (supposedly)

We can drink milkshakes with our daily nutrients,

Vitamins, energy drinks, coffee, all for dinner,

Some of us are still bigger than circus tents,

So we exercise dance our selves to death at Simmons events…

Is any of this necessary, do we need to look good for others,

As long as the self is happy, within and without or just about,

We can lose a few pounds and be told by our friends,

Hey you look better, that diet it does work, or so I do portend…

Live with and enjoy who you are, you cannot change that,

You are who you are from the inside out,

Most people I do know, friends and enemies alike,

All look quite good as long as they are happy or again just about…

I totally agree with this, Ed. Some of the most beautiful people I've met aren't "beautiful" at all...they're horrid, ugly, self-serving individuals whose vanity honestly disgusts me. Thank you for this, it mirrors my own thoughts :)

Though a bit longer than mine, you have expressed my basic mantra in life... I haven't time for superficial, shallow, or vane. Like me or don't, but if you do, I will surround you with myself and welcome the same... If you say it, own it... beauty is NOT "skin deep".. it's a roaring, blasting, quiet, creative, enigmatic adventure that lives within us all... I go looking for it in everyone and sometimes they are guarded and nervous... that's sad. Understanding each other is the single way to rid the world of hate! Fine commentary, Eddie M... katy xox.

Ed, Someone famous (?) supposedly said, "Beauty is as beauty does". Beautiful is on the inside--inner beauty. Someone who is NOT beautiful on the inside, is ugly all the way. Why our society puts so much emphasis on "looks" is beyond me. Perhaps it's just another way to escape reality.

Ha, sweet man, you've encompassed history and present and future with this whimsically serious piece... Ah, Ed, to live is to live. As you have Rufus, I have a Bug kitten sitting beside me on my computer chair. Kinky-tailed and bug-blue-eyed, he's a joy, and a pest!!! He's a wise, stupid genius of an idiotic cat. Sound familiar?! Hugs, Ed.

It's all about the inside... right? Well, at least it should be.

An inner peace always brings beauty out and this too I enjoy about people. Not the dyes and changes to appear younger or fitter. Although I must admit..........very soon my hair is changing colour. Guess I am getting ready to date again LOL.
