I have not been able to find this guys name on any U-Boat crew or commander listing, so while the story remains true to my knowledge, just not sure about the guys name...just for point of reference...Ed

During that war, Rudy Plapert(sp?) was a captain,

He did captain a submarine in the North Atlantic,

And the story goes, as I was yet to be born,

He did through his periscope see a place he felt he could be reborn…

He told his exec that after the war, whichever way it went,

He wanted to settle down and open a hotel on its shore,

For the war to be over quickly he was hell-bent,

It lasted too long anyway, years many over four…

At that time the German U-boaters would land & buy food,

Before America did enter the war, before they and Germany had a feud,

They would walk the length of the beach enjoying their mid war break,

Picking up a chicken or some eggs or if lucky finding some steak…

So the war did finally end, and Rudy DID build a hotel,

Called it the Dolphin and it still exists today,

He survived the second wars hell,

And became a hotelier in Sea Isle City,

No longer with us is Rudy, but his hotel still stands,

With great views of his first love the ocean & then the bay…

Ed,

How wonderful that Rudy saw his dream come true! So many people leave this earth before their dreams are realized. Great.
