Smokeclouds by Evangeline Jazz Gilmour Wednesday, June 13, 2012 Rated "G" by the Author. Share Print Save Become a Fan My class has just done a unit on the Holocaust and this poem reflects the mood at Auschwitz, one of the concentration camps in poland.
Smoke clouds Souls merge with smoke clouds, Drifting up in the air. Those who live, Whisper silent prayers. Their chances slim, Their hope dim. For there are no survivors, Beyond Hell's Gate.

I have read poems of Vietnamese prisoners held by their own people in the North. These poems are as sparse as the scraps of paper they are written on and a few grains of rice picked from the floor spilled by their laughing tormentors. They focused on food. I can picture the Jewish prisoners in the camps writing as sparsely from their lack of strength and nourishment to even think grander thoughts. Ron

There sure wasn't many survivors, Evangeline. I'm happy your school is bringing that up. We should never forget the evil that was done on those terrible years called World War II.
