We should put the blame where it truly lies. History never does, just people who rewrite history to meet their needs. For one, 90% of that “hole” you are talking about was paying for two wars that can clearly be placed on rigged lies to the United Nations and the declaration of “victory” long before it was ever in sight. Only a few voted against spending our money and our young men and women to beat up on Iraq. I was one of them, were you?
The other 10% was stimulus money to try to get the economy rolling in spite of stonewalling by people funded to keep us tied to greedy, unfair, and risky “free” unregulated enterprise fleecing us all. It was those shysters, those free-market wheeler dealers who caused the mortgage bubble, the banking debacle, and the stock market downturn. All the while padding their salaries, outsourcing jobs, and hiding income from taxes.
You are old enough to remember that it took FDR four terms (he was unpopular) and World War II before we got out of the Great Depression by the guy who was clearly to blame, a free enterprise champion and arrogant rich man, Herbert Hoover. This time, history will go the same way. We never learn from our mistakes. We have false “faiths” that we follow time and again––fight our enemies and grow, grow, grow. When are we going to learn?

| I would like to be first in line with a shovel in each hand to begin filling that whole. I will settle for going as early as legal, but not often, to vote on election day. George, I love the way you get to a point. Well done use of metaphore. Be well, Kathy |
