A long time

Table spaced in line
Bottle just past mine
Two glasses and a quill
Paper left to kill
She was me and I her wine

Summer wind came unrepentantly
Wife in bed
Work on table to be done
Midnight story run
Just looking over time
One more glass of wine

Phone rang
Small voice on other side sang
Been a while
Stop over lend a smile

Two writers face to face
Both older than lace
Covered in the many lines
Story written to find

Lovers once
Word smiths in view
Age has not changed you
Still the beauty of time

Most of the friends and writers
Dead and gone
Each mental picture rung
A standing review
Smiles I have always loved you

Sunshine as dark as rain
Growing on my window pain
Still in quiet we write
Just another night
But not the same

Bottle gone
Hat pulled low
Drip of life
I know

We exchanged 'obits'
Always was hit or miss
Kissed her goodnight
Caught the last flight
Gone home

...and you know
Table spaced in line
Bottle just past mine
Two glasses and a quill
Paper left to kill
She was me and I her wine
