Based on the painting by Italian artist, Silvestro Lega, C. 1884
Thought the painting was all that spoke to me, but I realized when done it was also inspired by the death of my cat this past October, so this one if for Johnny :)

Do you wear black
to mourn a love departed?
Because you wear black
like it belongs to your soul.

Do you wear a braid
to show your sad face?
Because you wear a braid
that makes your face so long.

Are your eyes downcast
because you are thinking of your loss?
Because your eyes don't seem
like they can see clearly anymore.

Do you hold your flowers up
to smell their sweet scent?
Because I wonder if you hold them,
to remember joy.
