A Lament

~Where hides the laughter once yours, my son~

Close your eyes.
Let me place my hand
atop your slumber.
Let me kiss a dream
upon your brow.

Lift your head.
Let me wipe the stain
down a path of tears
that rest naked now
upon your cheek.

One last time
Let me touch a cloth
seeped in hope to your lips,
and let its sweetness
drip grace down your throat.

I could,
but I would not,
this one last time, my child.
I will not rob you of your regrets
or bleed to nurse a woeful heart.

I could,
but I would not,
my child, this one last time.
I would not
pull the unhappy blade,
Lest, I dull your sword.
