Thoughts inspired by a recent exhibition in London by French artist, Annette Messager.

I AM

a universe of the everyday –
of identity and desire:

practical, trickster,
peddler, lover;

gap-toothed montage
of photos, string, knives
and soft toys;

bearer of no message
on well-oiled
yet squeaky wheels.

Consider me French,
winds of billowing consonants
aimed across a narrow strait,
walking t/sm/all,
defying customs;

a je(u) of many “mes”,
of the solemn-eyed child
and the fully-grown delinquent;

each throw of the dice
odds-on with a world
of contest, chance,
mimicry and muddle.

My je(u) has no rules,
no aims, no consequences:

all you do is p(ar)lay.

I don't know why, and you'll have to excuse me for it, but your poem brought to mind a BBC comedy I just saw on American PBS where the old Brit gentleman and his French counterpart thoroughly enjoyed each other, and connected on a number of topics. Then as he turned away, the ancient Englishman mumbled out loud, "Bloody Frog." I guess this pops out of me because you employed humor here along with strong symbols of identity. I truly appreciate the intelligence that went into this creation, and I will be contemplating it for a while. Don't we have wonderful minds to make such connections?........Jerry

Glory be...the humorous side of our Kate shines through very well in this imaginitive verse! So enjoy the word-play of a "...fully-grown delinquent"!! (I now see you jumping in a mud[dle]-puddle :o) DE-lightful read, dear friend...

Look at you going Nessie on us...with a french twist (french braid?) (french toast?)... love it all, but Kate, that "billowing consonants" line stunned me.

YOU ROCK! --Charlie

You, your poem and the mention of Ms. Messager in one mêlée contrives the word COLLAGE, of things, of ideas, of emotions.
Trés bien!

Getting cutesy with the wordage, my friend / You can stand as tall as the next one when it comes to your delightful, somber, insane, whatever poetry. You cannot be pigeonholed into any corner of the poetical landscape, you delve into the abstract as well as the grim and the NOW. Stand. Clap. Clap. Take a bow. Corny? Yeah. I don't care. Take another bow.

Love the word play in this...
Your poetry made me think of France & of my excursion there a few years back with my daughter, Ahna. Which brought me full circle to think about what and who she is today... and reminded me that life is short, and full of unexpected surprises--not all of which are good. (Ahna is struggling with what may be serious health issues which are hopefully being diagnosed this week...but is 8 hours away from home.)
We dream of playing and living life to the fullest, but when confronted with those little unpleasant twists that life throws at us we learn to be thankful for the little blessings we have...that of just living and loving and family and friends.
Thanks for your perspective...
