I really had no idea I would be so greatly affected, not having been in this situation before, but now I know of the pain first-hand that so many experience - and am in awe of anyone who treads this path more than once. | I am so sorry for your loss, Kate Some people do realize there is a lot more to our pet family than what was thought before We are finding out that they have a lot more intelligence that some people give them credit for and that they have such wonderful qualities that surpass even those of some humans |

Great One,
your beautiful Willow has left...
but not left, our children never leave us;
it's how you handle the loss that makes this
such a worthy piece of writing, you come to
terms with grief...'cream-coloured cows'
'rough-coated shadow' and 'heavy-pelted shake'
and in that tightly-held grief - all the more poignant -
share the old dog with us; love the reference
to Alexander ordering the cutting of the horses'
tails and manes at the death of Hephaestion, and with it
broaden the loss to universal.

This transcends the muted canine commemoration that so customarily accompanies a loss your poem superbly orchestrates, delineating in deep and moving tones how this particular dog's effect on his day moved you in so palpable and impressive a way... and you express this in your own inimitable way with such a potent verve in your verses. It is always exciting to come to your own unique spot in our Den, and see you have decorated it so uniquely and memorably. Be well and stay safe. Your dog is looking down with pride at how you've enshrined his memory in your pantheon of poetry.

Oh my heart goes out to you. I had to do this with our 13 yr old Beagle "Buster". It is so heart breaking, but so much more compassionate.
I wish we could do this to humans in pain and suffering...
Remember all those fond memories you with your precious Willow and know that you did the right thing...

| I knew this was coming to a sad end as I read and digested your super wordplay, beside the picture more or less telegraphed the sad end. I have had a few put dawn, the latest three years ago. It was the hardest because the vet didn't know what she was doing and hurt my dog. This was a superb piece of poetry, Kate. My condolences. |

| This is truly an inspirational piece of melancholy, addressing far more than its textual subject, asking the heart and thinking of the reader to allow in between the line perception to nurture the compassion for nature and life we so often ignore. The impact of a canine companion is like no other... having had such daily comforts most of my life. My last two, a black and yellow lab, were such that entertaining another round of loss is beyond my courage meter for now. Your poem is a penetrating reminder of both the human and canine bond with nature. Thank you. |
