You are always there to comfort me.
And as I enter, welcomed
by your unexpected attention,
I realize, more and more,
You are always there.

There is only one of you for one of me,
and yet, I can see you amidst the crowd,
as your painfully clear light
betrays your identity,

You are always there.

And I remember, Ah, there is he
who couldn't decide,
who struggles to rebuild
after the disaster he found
in recognizing only one.

Too many years,
and so I took the little gold
friendship ring,
with it's tiny crucifix
thereupon engraved,
and I told the Pastor
on Mother's Day
to give it to our Lord,
to give it rest.

And I see its likeness,
announcing now and then,
the weakest finger
betraying that meaning to me alone.
My friend was lost to me.
But you are still my friend,
and I can still always see you amidst the crowd.

You are always there.

Deeply touching, this well-written piece to a loved one lost. Beautiful.

I like the dual meaning in this I guess its all a question of faith and who we put out faith in.

Jennifer, this tears at my heartstrings. I love how your poetry is at once both simple and complex. You have what would, on the surface, appear to be a simple theme but, as others have indicated, the underlying implied messages and emotions are anything but simple. I hope you have a wonderful holiday, and that you are doing well.

As Rose suggested in her review, I believe there is so much said betweent the lines and also think there is much left for the readers interpretation. There is sadness or perhaps the overcoming of sadness and the finding of new strength...and love the symbology of turning the ring over to the Pastpr. Excellant work here Jennifer.
