Do unto others...

We pulled our old wagon

through drifts of fresh snow,

brimming with Christmas

for those needing it most.

Meowing friends hitched a ride

amid wrap that concealed

slates, chalk, and pennies,

rag dolls, mittens, socks,

plus mouthwatering scents

of baked ham, cakes, and pies.

As we trudged down the hill,

a cry rang through the woods…

“Die Engel sind hier!”

(The angels are here!)

There were smiles, hugs, and tears

from the poorest of folk.

Their renewed sense of hope

stirred the depths of our hearts.

And in offering our love,

it was we who were blessed.

Too early for Christmas? We once had Christmas in July when our family couldn't get together during the winter because my younger sister was overseas. That was great fun, even without the snow...

Fantastic write in my books, it encompasses all that Christmas stands for from the smiles of children to the joy of giving. Good luck and I think it is a marvelous entry.

This certainly should win first prize. The poem embodies all that Christmas is about, just glows with warmth, and we can smell the fine foods and hear the feline hitchhikers. A truly delightful read.

A stunning poem, Michelle, good job! You make me long for the crisp snap in the air of wintertime and the warm smells that pour from the kitchen as the families gather to share their blessings and bounties with all who enter their homes. Truly the gift is in the giving more so than in the receiving and what better way to say Merry Christmas than to give to those who are in need. Good luck with the contest.
Take care,
