I find myself digging through the rubble
the stark remains of another collapsed relationship
I sift through the aftermath
salvaging tiny slivers of happiness
times we knew of laughter and oneness
We were inseperable
The perfect couple
I was his balance
He was my sense of protection and security
I said I would never fully let my guard down
that explains why I couldn't love him more
I never let go of the feeling I would
again be alone someday
I always said if things went wrong
I would walk away and not look back
I never pictured myself doing that
just knew I might have to someday
because nothing ever lasts forever
As much as we dream it will
The sad thing about forever
when you shift a few letters around
it's OVER
I don't know who plunged the shaft into
his heart
I don't think it was me
Maybe he was always heartless
I missed the perception others saw him to be
I watched as he silently and persistently
pushed me out of his life
He didn't want a wife
he wanted the novelty of someday having one
Now he'll be a lonely man
or maybe not
Maybe I was pushed aside for someone else
some new shard of happiness
A new challenge
another weak heart to capture until it too
will be worthless enough to smash
to smithereens
I hope its worth it
I was
until I walked away
