Misted Mind

As she lies in gifted slumber

swollen eyes gaze upon her bed

soft sobs beyond her hearing

no words for her to dread

Dreams are on the love she’s missing

the wonderment to her eyes

his laugh and teasing mischief

revealed each moment that she sighs

What of her unknown tomorrows

dare time vanquish her yesterdays

will memories stay dead and buried

or be reborn with much malaise

The eyes that hold her vision

reveal the worry of no deny

teardrops of doubt fall gently

a cracked smile is their reply

Fingers tremble as if searching

for shoulders with which to clutch

heart yearns to the point of breaking

for the love that’s missed so much

Oh how she tries to fathom

ones demise on unknown land

all peace and love has brought her

is nothing, not even a hand

When men clash over livings indifference

and no medium can they find

lead and shell create a hell

where bodies are no longer defined

Was for her life and that of others

the safety of our bounded shores

that he chose his hearts conviction

and did his duty of unwanted chores

Now what of tomorrow’s dawn

will lips speak of things unknown

how can she explain to eyes of  excitement

that her daddy’s not coming home

Painfully bold and heartbreaking poem, TD. There is excellent cadance to this ofering that holds the attention of the reader to the last word. You are such a good writer, I wish that you had more time to delight us with your creative pen. I was thinking of you today as the parade was going down the street, drumming up excitement for the State Fair which opened last night. I live one block from the fairgrounds so for me it is two weeks of trying to keep people from parking in my yard and cleaning up trash that they leave behind. However, there is the early morning entertainment as I drive up Route 66 to work and see the Carnies staggering back to the fairgrounds after evenings of dubious activities. I love the Route every day...it is truly a slice of Americana.
Take care,

A wake-up call. The soldier may not be coming home indeed. But what does this mean to a child? Only everything...

Masterfully done!

Poetically faultless.
The poem has a very powerful impact, even though it is gentle, once I got to the last lines instinctively I took a sharp intake of breath.
Excellent work, Thunder.
