Evening Shadows

The night was warm and soft

thick with stars

hanging low over a river

appearing as a faint metallic thread

that wound its way through the dark

The moon was the narrowest

of silver silvers overhead

a pale smear on the night

blinking coyly down

playing hide and seek

behind a screen of shifting clouds

Tree branches rustling casting shadows

that swayed and danced

upon the wooden deck

in eerie time to a hint of music

drifting on a breeze

Flickering candlelight

cast the couple’s shadows behind them

to drape upon the wall

As they watched

the shadows raise spectral wine glasses

the wall catching their red glow

Carol, how beautiful. The words flow from one to the other sounding almost as the beating of two hearts, or the slight clinking of crystal wine glasses. Romantically stated.

Fabulous poetic build here, Carole. A wonderfully executed capture that is warmly evocative and full of layered depths. The finale is delicious and delightful - yes, vivid indeed. Those spectral glasses being just a sheen of light on the wall, tinged with a quivering rosiness is just BRILLIANT! :)) xx

Carole,
Richly atmospheric from first to last, the images hold and sustain the reader as well as sustaining the poem itself, and the last three lines are of exceptional quality.

salute! -- you shared the moment of romance, wine and moonlight superbly Carole -- I even heard the "spectral wine glasses", softly peal as they gently touched in a toast to love -- peace and love my dear friend -- Jon Michael
