Knock Down Knock Out Fight

It's almost eight years that I'm cancer-free. Each day is a celebration and every second a miracle for which I am eternally grateful. I truly live my life now, and though I live with chronic debilitating pains, I have such joy in my heart and soul that sometimes I think I'm going to explode. I also have to let cancer know, ever so often, where I stand and that I am quite aware that the fight continues and that I never let my guard drop. Yes, I'm the protagonist here and I am ever mindful.

We had a knock down knock out fight

You knocked me down and I knocked you out

And I don’t predict another round

Because when I hit you back… I did so with all my might

Don’t mess with me I don’t scare so easy

Don’t step on my property because on you I’ll go crazy

Hands off don’t touch that is my philosophy

Because I refuse to let the likes of you dictate to me

I have my life to live and I do so with ease

But you just want me to exist- just put my whole life on freeze

You can hold on to that thought fool- it will get you nowhere

In my mind, heart and spirit you don’t have a prayer

You see I know my rights and I’m willing to exert them

Surviving cancer to me is not someone else’s problem

This is my life, this my right, this is my goddamn fight

You showed up on my doorsteps and gave me a hell of a fright

But I’m over that now because I faced all my fears

I threw a pity party and cried all of my tears

Now I’m in fight mode, you see, that feeling’s never gone

Though I won that battle the war still wages on

So you’d better mind your “P’s” and “Q’s” cancer

If you know what’s good for you

Because this cancer warrior don’t play that

I’ll beat your dumb arse black and blue

My dear Pamilla,
Surely of anyone in our AD online community, you are one who can appreciate how inspirational this posting is for me.

Last Thursday I received the word from my urologist: "Mr. Orey, your prostate biopsy results are back. You do have cancer. It's advanced and aggressive."

And I am stunned. I'm full of energy and enthusiasm and active in not only writing but bowling and running and paddling in my beloved bright red canoe and enjoying frequent family gatherings. How can this be? But it is.

And now my fight begins. I have unimaginable family love and support. And I have my awareness of your fight and your victory and your ever-present due diligence and the wonderful sharing of your personal confidence and steadfast faith.

Thank you, my dear friend, for this timely posting. It's almost as if God reached out and said, "Share your feelings today with Richard. Tell him how to have a for-real Knock Down Knock Out Fight." And you did. And I'm feeling better and stronger already!

Love and best wishes,
Richard
