A series of themed Tankas echoing Wallace Stevens

Mulberries

I
The mulberry bush
Dancing in the garden grass
Sings a song for me
In childhood memory voice
Swinging an old lunchbox behind

II
What color is it?
The shade of a mulberry
It is a lark’s tongue
A comma before the thought
A pause before we journey

III
It will flow down you
Running from your mouth in streams
Catch some with your pen
Such mulberry juice can be
Wasted by only wishing

IV
A mulberry bush
Has no protection from girls
Who spirit its fruit
Away in purple t-shirts
To dine in shade enclave

V
A wren lights a twig
It plucks a song from the leaves
A mulberry sprig
It flies away to carry
The seed to valley’s barren

VI
Can I stretch branches
Just far enough to touch tips
To touch lips with sweetened trace
Of a mulberry moment
Here in this sun-soaked valley

VII
You cannot live here
The shade only lasts so long
And then you’re open
With only mulberry seeds
To take on your journey home
