The event was in Texas - the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. But with only small changes, this poem would fit many other locations. Art draws a crowd, much of it not there primarily for the art. But in the end, art shugs and moves forward.

Concert Hall
Texans stand tall
For music, pride and status.
Others have their reasons
For being in the crowd.
Critics gather grist
Scouts seek talent
One audience listens intently,
Another wears its best to be seen.
Young artists give their all,
Fiery, pensive, addled with nerves.
They woo, entreat, wound and conquer,
While in the hall's high reaches
Mozart, Schuman and Rachmaninov
Nod encouragement,
Chuckle and abide.

| Hi Charlie. First time readin you I believe. Very accurate portrait here complete with all the competing motivation and emotional tension bandied about in such an atmosphere. I wonder if the three composers you mentioned could keep it to the chuckle in the midst of all those ten-gallon Texan egos? Enjoyed this very much, Dawn |
