Collateral Damage
Done with the ages of Reason,
Of Enlightenment and now,
Most of all, of Innocence,
We enter the Age of Revenge.
Even at the very top,
There’s little happiness with
The best of what we’ve got.
But we know how to revel in excess,
Material, moral, spiritual,
Converting all our fears
About an unknown future
Into bullets of hate and blame
Fired at every shadow, on automatic.
Bring on the targets.
That’s not you?
Okay, it’s not me either.
But do we enjoy too much
Mister Snappy Snark,
Or Ms Snap Judgment?
And not call out the shallowness
Opportunism, and plain ignorance
That is their trade mark?
The greed of big venality,
If it’s honestly described,
Should be in our sights.
But sniping blindly at what’s easy
Can murder what’s important.
And even snips and slicings
Drain us of respect and inclusion,
Cost each of us our blood,
Drop by drop by drop.
